Grille

Pilsen, Bohemia, 1740–1760

Wrought, twisted malleable iron with clasps. The grille comprises three separate sections. Flat forged bands interconnected through the use of rich ornamentation. Centre plate bearing the monograms “DSS” and “DAS”.

Grille from the “Eye of Providence” house on Republic Square in Pilsen. The original balcony railing grille was likely created in 1745 when the house was redesigned by the owner, Jan Jakub Slavík. Museum director and architect Josef Škorpil acquired it for the museum’s collections in 1908, when the interior was being remodelled.
